MEDWAY - WINTER is here...
The Homeless Emergency Winter Refuge is open for at least 3 nights this week - each night we have 4 overnight volunteers, plus 2 people to welcome guests... our guests receive hot drinks, a light snack (thank you Debbie for the amazing homemade mince pies tonight), and has the opportunity to get a good wash - we have "foot baths" (aka washing up bowls), toiletries, new socks & underwear, plus clean warm clothing. The OBF Shoebox for a Stranger appeal starts here. Last year the response was overwhelming and boxes were distributed far and wide. Not only to the street homeless but to refuges, hostels etc. The idea is that you fill a box with necessary items and some treats. Now it doesn’t have to be a shoebox, it isn’t always practical to hand someone on the street a shoebox so you can go either way, a shoebox or a rucksack. One Big Family was founded nearly 3 years ago by Darren & Liz Shaw, and is run ENTIRELY by a hugely dedicated group of volunteers... without whom our work would not be possible. Based in Medway, we not only help the homeless, we also help those in hostels/vulnerable accommodation, and anyone in financial hardship...
In Medway we hold a weekly Soup Kitchen on a Sunday - where we provide hot food, clothing, toiletries, and signpost to other age
It was a Pot Noodle kind of night last night. We wouldn’t always eat this as a food of choice but for the people we see it’s something warm. We are always on the look out for Pot Noodle bargains!! Socks, boxer shorts and wipes are the most requested item we hand out along with a nice brew and a smile! We saw many people last night, not in their usual spots as they are currently being issued warnings for sitting in the street or begging which can lead to fines. This is done to

Sunday November 12th
With dipping temparatures we have had our inaugural night at the refuge!! A warm welcome awaited our first guests of the year.. for some, it was their first night in a bed since the beginning of the year (when the Refuge was last running!)
