Our two younger volunteers, Oscar and Lewis, who are are at Huddersfield University held an awareness stall on campus. They spoke to students about what we do and why we do it. I am so proud to have these two lads on the team!
With another cold spell forecast for the weekend, the Homeless Emergency Winter Refuge in Chatham will reopen on Friday until at least Tuesday morning... please share with anyone who may need it So far we have been open for over 70 nights, and provided in excess of 1000 beds to rough sleepers in Medway - as well as a bed, we help with accommodation referrals (alongside our housing partners we have supported several people into accommodation), signposting for health concerns (
So just an update so we went out on Wednesday night we brought out food, juice and hot drinks just like to say a thank you to the canteen in Victoria for the hot food they provided and thank you to tesco for all the cakes and bread. On Wednesday night I met a few people who needed advice I met a Hungarian man who was in severe pain and didn't speak much English so I found someone who speaks great English as well as Hungarian and got him to explain where the hospital
Last night made me realise more than ever what a vicious circle homelessness is. When you are asked the question, can you get me a bed for the night? You reply sorry it’s not cold enough. The person is cold and wet because it’s rained literally all day and their sleeping bag is soaked. Then comes the statement ‘I’ll get myself arrested then, at least I’ll be warm and dry’. It has been a busy time and we have been worried about the people we see and their wellbeing during the awful cold snap. Luckily all the people who wanted a bed last week were accommodated under the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol. We found them very helpful last week. So last night we headed out armed with Hot drinks, lovely sausage rolls made by a caterer fo
