One Big Family established a Sunday evening soup kitchen in Medway, at a time when no other such service is available. There is a friendly atmosphere, and plenty of hot food, drinks, clothing, toiletries and bedding available. This is all served by our amazing volunteers who go above and beyond to make sure everyone is happy. we now regularly have between 50/80 people attending – as well as a number of dogs! This is located by the big screen next to Chatham bus station and runs from 18.30 to 20.00.
In addition to the soup kitchen, we do regular outreach work around the Medway Towns as well as offering support by signposting to other organisations and accompanying people to appointments, such as with the council’s housing team and doctors.
Throughout Winter 2016/17 we worked alongside HALO in the Emergency Homeless Refuge (which opened ANY night the temperature dropped to zero or below) - Last winter 2017/18 we worked in partnership with them. We now open when the feels like temperature is zero or below. We regularly get around 15/20 rough sleepers a night.
The 2018/19 winter saw us run the refuge alone for the first time. New beds and bedding were provided. Once again we were full most nights offering comfort, warmth, a listening ear, a smile and any advice we could help with. We were joined by members of other organisations who gave advice and help any way they could.
Every Saturday we do outreach work in central Maidstone, distributing hot drinks, food and essential items to those who are sleeping rough and vulnerably housed there.
We work very closely with other organisations and we are part of the Supporting the Homeless in Medway Network.
We are very proud to be the winners of the Pride in Medway awards 2017 and we were again been nominated for the award in 2018 and we were proud winners of the MHS homes award 2019
